The founder
Dr Paul Froomes
Gastroenterologist (MBBS, FRACP)
He founded The Microbiome Clinic so that people can have a doctor go through their microbiome results in the context of their history, if they choose.
Background
A gastroenterologist who kept arriving at the gut.
Dr Froomes studied medicine at Monash University and completed his physician training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians at the Austin Hospital, Melbourne. He went on to complete a post-doctoral degree in liver disease at the University of Melbourne, with further training in advanced endoscopic techniques in Sydney and in oesophageal physiology in Adelaide.
Across a career in hospital and private practice he saw the same pattern: patients with digestive symptoms, a folder of normal results, and no clear next step. Microbiome testing offered a different kind of information, and it is most useful when a doctor can go through it alongside a full history. The Microbiome Clinic was built so that option is there.
He takes part in general practitioner education programs and medical student teaching, and has been an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Away from medicine, he has written four action-adventure novels.

The book
Dr Froomes’ book on gut health.
Now in a new edition, with updated chapters on what current research is exploring about the gut microbiome — including its associations with weight, immunity, mood and general wellbeing. It includes low FODMAP and microbiome reload recipes.
Written by Dr Paul Froomes, gastroenterologist (MBBS, FRACP), it unpacks the world of gut bacteria in plain language and with some humour, drawing on published research and on what he sees in consultation.
It is general information, not medical advice, and not a substitute for a consultation with your own doctor.
