Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated skin condition where skin cells multiply too quickly, causing thick, scaly patches.
Overview
Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated skin condition where skin cells multiply too quickly, causing thick, scaly patches. It affects about 2–3% of Australians, often starting in early adulthood but possible at any age. It’s not contagious, but it can be persistent and linked to other health issues like arthritis, heart disease, and depression.
Common Misunderstandings
Many think psoriasis is “just dry skin,” but it’s an immune condition with systemic effects. Patients often feel self-conscious about visible plaques, avoid activities like swimming, and can become frustrated after years of creams or steroids that don’t stop flare-ups.
How is Psoriasis Linked to Your Microbiome?
- Psoriasis is linked with changes in the skin microbiome (e.g., more Streptococcus and fewer protective bacteria) which may influence local inflammation¹.
- The gut microbiome also appears altered — with lower diversity and fewer beneficial species that help regulate the immune system².
- Some studies show improvement with dietary changes that support gut health, though evidence is still emerging.
- The gut–skin immune link may explain why psoriasis is associated with metabolic syndrome and bowel inflammation.

The Microbiome Clinic™
Our treatment approach for Psoriasis includes:
Gut Microbiome Test
The Gut Microbiome Test identifies imbalances and pathogens in the gut flora to explain symptoms and guide precise, personalised treatment and prevention.
Targeted Antimicrobial Strategies
Antibiotics and plant-based/pharmaceutical antimicrobials (where appropriate) to reduce the overgrown population of unwanted bacteria in the gut and skin.
Probiotics and Prebiotics
Targeted probiotics and prebiotics are introduced slowly to restore balance and biodiversity of microbes in the gut and skin without fuelling overgrowth.
Individualised Nutrition Plans
Recommendations based on the latest science to enhance the effectiveness of the Repair-4™ and maintenance programs prescribed by your doctor.
